Richard George Groome was the first child of Joseph and Elizabeth Groome born in America. He was born on 24 Aug 1851 in Tennessee, most likely in or near Memphis. Richard married Francis "Fannie" Russell on 9 Jan 1877 according to their marriage license found in the Circuit Clerk's office in Vicksburg. According to their tombstone inscriptions, Fannie was born on 10 Apr 1857.
Richard was working as a plumber in the 1895 city directory, but by 1905 he was deputy sheriff, and by 1910 he was the police chief for Vicksburg. According to one source, he was police chief for 12 years, and had also served as Vicksburg's fire chief.
