Leander J. Hewett was born 8 Jul 1812 in Knox County, Maine to Waterman and Patience Keen Hewett. Little is known about him other than he was in Catahoula County, Louisiana in the 1840 census. Then he was in Natchez, Mississippi when he married Felicity Paul on 14 Jun 1841.
Leander and Felicity are said to have had four children: Florence, Gertrude, Nida, and Haco. Nothing has been learned about Florence other than she appears to have married Augustus T. Margraf in Natchez on 4 Apr 1860.
Gertrude Zane Hewett was born 4 Dec 1845 in Iberville, Louisiana. She married Henry Everett Ellis 21 Mar 1861 in Natchez. They had two daughters: Florence who was born in December 1862, and Katie Beulah who was born on 12 Aug 1872. Henry Ellis died on 7 Jun 1879 in East Feliciana, Louisiana. Gertrude died on 7 Jan 1916 in Dresden, Tennessee.
We discuss Nida Hewett on another page. The final child, Haco, is said to have been born in 1850 and died in 1851.
Leander Hewett was descended from three Mayflower passengers: Richard Warren, James Chilton, and Edward Fuller. His father, Waterman Hewett, was descended from Richard Warren and James Chilton. Leander's mother, Patience Keen, was also descended from Richard Warren as well as from Edward Fuller. Without going into great detail, here are their links to these Mayflower passengers.
Waterman Hewett was a son of Joseph Hewett and his wife Ann Waterman. Through Joseph, Waterman's grandparents were Joseph Hewett and Sarah Dingley. This Joseph Hewett was the son of Solomon Hewett and Sarah Waterman. Sarah Waterman was a daughter of Joseph Waterman and Sarah Snow, and Sarah Snow was a daughter of Anthony Snow and Abigail Warren who was Richard Warren's daughter.
Through his mother, Ann Waterman Hewett, Waterman Hewett was also descended from Richard Warren as well as James Chilton. Ann Waterman Hewett's parents were Thomas and Abigail (Thomas) Waterman. The parents of Thomas Waterman were Anthony Waterman and Elizabeth Arnold. Anthony was a brother to Sarah Waterman and a son of Sarah Snow, described above. Anthony's wife, Elizabeth Arnold, was a daughter of Seth Arnold and his wife, Elizabeth Gray. Elizabeth was a daughter of Edward Gray and Mary Winslow. Mary was a daughter of John Winslow and Mary Chilton who was a daughter of James Chilton.
Leander Hewett's mother, Patience Keen, was a daughter of Jacob Keen and Deborah Keen. Jacob and Deborah were second cousins. Deborah Keen was a daughter of Isaac Keen and Lydia Jones. Both of these were descended from Mayflower passengers. Isaac Keen's parents were Josiah Keen and Lydia Baker. Josiah Keen was a son of Josiah Keen and Abigail Little. Abigail was a daughter of Thomas Little and Anna Warren who was another daughter of Richard Warren.
Lydia Jones, Leander's great-grandmother, was a daughter of Isaac Jones and Patience Stetson. Isaac was a son of Jedidiah Jones and Hannah Davis. Jedidiah was a son of Ralph Jones and Mary Fuller. Mary was a daughterof Matthew and Francis Fuller. Matthew was a son of Edward Fuller, the Mayflower passenger.
