Sometimes we'll have something that just doesn't fit in any other category. When that happens, we'll put it here.
From Black Chickens to Whale Blubber.
A step back in time to look at medicine in the 1800s. This is not an in-depth medical book but a look at the progress made during this period of history, particularly in the South. Starting with old-time remedies passed on through generations, to the era of Snake Oil and patent medicines, dentistry, eye care, the old country doctor and during the Civil War. It ends with some of the wacky and often dangerous machines or techniques used. Many illustrations of tools and equipment. 42 pages, no index. E-book price is $10.00.

Reprint of a story written in1858 by an unknown author. This first appeared in the Knickerbocker, a former New York magazine. The tale is of a wealthy seventeen year old daughter of a planter who lives near Mammoth Cave and loves to explore its depths. Her life is changed forever when she falls in love with a Northerner, her tutor. Unrequited love causes her to carry a horrible secret until she nears her death. A fictitious story but one that leaves the reader to wonder if it could be based on true events due to the writer's description of the area and time. It appears that the story transpired in the 1830's. Only 18 pages long; I have added a background of Mammoth Cave at the approximate time when this story unfolds and illustrations. A wonderful story which was typical of writing of the era.c $5.00 Bear Wallow Belles Originally published in 1903 by Dr. C. R. Wilson, this is quite a delightful book. A novel? Yes. Historical? Yes. A love story? Yes. A Civil War story? Yes. The setting is Bear Wallow, KY in Barren County 1861 through 1863. Using real people and real events in this little community, Dr. Wilson weaves a tale of many events. Some people are real from our history here; some are fictitious - or their names were disguised. The reader meets people from Chicken Bristle, Goosehorn, Lick a Skillet and Hell's Half Acre - a combination of Southern people, their slaves, an Irishman and some Yankees tossed in. The tale revolves around the Civil War and how it impacts the people of Bear Wallow. Some fighting for the South, some for the North, all dedicated to the cause, Right in the middle are the Bear Wallow Belles, three beautiful young ladies from the South and the North, all living in Bear Wallow. The book comes complete with tender courtships, the horror of war, the bravery of the young men who loved the Belles .... with a louse, a church mouse, an unusual duel and other interesting tales included. The last two pages will stun the reader. Whether one is from the North or South, this is also a touching look at slavery in a peaceful community with many other characters adding to the charm and humor. 136 pages including biographical information, a look at the communities mentioned and fullname index. $15.00 Kentucky Memories, An Illustrated Look At How It Used To Be.
